The prospect of Appalachian petrochemical development has reached a critical juncture.

For more than a decade, policymakers in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia have built their economic development strategies around the expectation that the region’s abundant supplies of natural gas would trigger a vast expansion of energy and manufacturing, bringing with it jobs and prosperity. But development of major projects in the region stalled, and well before the onset of the coronavirus crisis. In the virus’ aftermath, both global markets and policy responses to climate change have thrown into doubt the viability of the Appalachian petrochemical dream.

What’s the likelihood of an Appalachian petrochemical buildout? How would our region change if one takes place? What will happen if it doesn’t?
